In recognition of the University's conviction that excellence in teaching should be a major concern of every faculty member, the following University awards are presented annually to honor "outstanding" faculty teaching efforts. All awards are announced at the annual University Founders Day Ceremony.

William E. Wine Award

The William E. Wine Award is given for a history of university teaching excellence in memory of W. E. Wine, an alumnus and former rector of the Board of Visitors. Three awards of $2000 are given each year. Nominations by students, alumni, and faculty in each college are reviewed by respective college selection committees. The colleges' selected candidates are reviewed by the University Wine Award Committee, which then selects the three award recipients each year. For more information about this year's process, go to Wine Teaching Award Guidelines.

Alumni Teaching Award

The Alumni Teaching Award is given for teaching excellence within the academic Colleges. The Academy of Teaching Excellence selects two recipients each year from the College Teaching Excellence Certificate holders of the past three years. Two awards of $2000 are given each year. Certificates of Teaching Excellence are chosen by each College, and each may have its own individual deadlines and procedures. For more information about this year's process, go to Alumni Teaching Award guidelines.

University Sporn Award

This award is for teaching excellence in introductory subjects in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Philip J. Sporn. Dr. Sporn was president and chief executive officer of the American Electric Power Company. One award of $2000 is given each year. Nominations are received from students only, and the recipient is chosen by a student committee working within the University Provost's office.

The recipients of the above three major teaching awards are inducted into the Academy of Teaching Excellence each year.

Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising

One award of $2000 is given each year for excellence in undergraduate advising. The Alumni Undergraduate Advising Award committee reviews nominations made by students, alumni, faculty, departments, or self-nominations, and selects a recipient.

Alumni Award for Excellence in Graduate Academic Advising

One award of $2000 is given each year for excellence in graduate advising. The Alumni Graduate Advising Award committee reviews nominations made by students, alumni, faculty, departments, or self-nominations, and selects a recipient.

An individual who has received any one of these awards is ineligible for another major award for a period of seven years and can receive any particular award only once.
